Dannik’s Gunbarrel Corner Bar is a neighborhood restaurant featuring some of the best live music anywhere.
Owner Dan King is a well-known blues lover who hosted national and international blues acts at his old venue, the Boulder Outlook Hotel. The Outlook was a major club on the national blues circuit and everyone who was into the blues knew about it. The Colorado Blues Society held their monthly meeting at the hotel. Dan would bring in blues musicians and give them a place to stay as well as perform. It was a Godsend for touring bands. Legendary performers like Ronnie Baker Brooks, Delores Scott, Janiva Magness, Rory Block and Damon Fowler have graced the stage.
King and his son, Nick, have turned Dannik’s into a destination club that offers Gunbarrel residents another option for killer food and terrific music. They have a varied menu, serving dishes like a traditional Irish Breakfast, delicious Hanger Steak, and Ancient Grains Salad.
You can see friends at the bar any given night of the week, too, enjoying truly great music right here in the ‘hood.
Just a few years ago there was nothing in Gunbarrel for music lovers. You had to go to Longmont, Boulder, or Denver to get your fix. Dannik’s has changed all of that. There’s a Sunday night Open Mic hosted by Mark Arroyo for musicians, poets, and comedians; Thursday Karaoke and Ladies Night and live bands on Fridays and Saturdays. Recent performers include Delta Groove recording artist John Long, Blues Hall of Fame guitarist/singer Bobby Messano, and local bluesman Lionel Young (Lionel Young is the first musician to win both the solo/duo and group categories at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennessee).
The blues is always in the house at Dannik’s, but you can also hear straight country from Longmont-based musicians Davy Allard and the Honkabilly Heroes and acoustic roots music from bands like Paper Moonshine.
A new music event is Paul Soderman and the BBC (Boulder Blues Club) Reunion Band on the third Thursday of every month. Paul Soderman is a fine blues singer who knows how to put on a show. The BBC is a rotating cast of some of the best players in the area. The band hits the stage at 7pm and plays until 9:30pm. $5 cover.
The Gunbarrel music scene is just getting started and Dannik’s is a big reason why. The city of Boulder used to be known as a live music mecca. Unfortunately, that reputation no longer holds true. Clubs like Tulagi’s, The Good Earth, and the Blue Note are just a memory now. With the exception of eTown Hall, the Boulder Theater, and the Fox Theater, there isn’t a live club music scene in the city. Most Boulder-based musicians will tell you they are usually playing in Denver and towns right outside of Boulder to make a living.
Dannik’s Gunbarrel Corner Bar, however, is an exception to that rule, bringing great entertainment to the neighborhood.
